GCPTA MEETING MINUTES

The meeting was opened by Steve Ames and the participants introduced themselves.

Subcommittee - Funding - Joanna Kile and Steve Ames
(1)Subcommittee recommended the development of student workbooks to go with the instructor guides. These workbooks will increase workbooks from the instructor guides. Also this will help the GCPTA secure funds for its operating budget. Subcommittee received approval from the GCPTA members to pursue this activity. Anyone interested in the development of the student workbooks, contact Steve Ames by April 21, 1999.

Subcommittee - Public Relations - Karen Baird
The next newsletter will go out 2nd week of May. All
articles for the newsletter are due Friday, April 30, 1999 by 4:00pm.
The newsletter will be published every four months. Primedia has
volunteered postage and distribution of the newsletter. Possible new
Gulf Coast Process Technology Alliance Stationary Logo. Career Expo
has been moved to Friday, February 11, 2000, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm at the
San Jacinto-Central Campus Ballroom. Only one career expo will be held
per year. For a copy of the Press Release for the Bellwether Award,
please call Valerie at 281-834-0766. Conference - co-sponsor for the
Bellwether Award - National Counsel for Occupational Education -
October in Seattle, Washington.
Subcommittee - Education - Troy Waters for Barry Hardy & Denise
Navarro
Pilot meeting at College of the Mainland, Friday, May 14,
1999 for SH&E and Intro. courses. Call Cheryl Smith of TDS at
281-488-1128 to RSVP for this meeting.

Texas Skills Standards Board
Lee Rector purposed idea that GCPTA and Texas Skills
Standards Board work together to find common ground. New subcommittee
was formed, Skills Standards Subcommittee. This
subcommittee is chaired by Cathy Williams-Foster. Anyone interested in
membership for this subcommittee, contact Cathy at 713-215-3262 or at
cathy.foster@wilcom.com.
Distance Learning - Duncan Welder

Financial Report - John Payne
Budget was approved 4-16-99. The budget works on a
calendar year. Change the subscriptions so the colleges to match
industry subscriptions. Subscription letters have gone out. Still
waiting on responses. Albemarle will sponsor GCPTA booth at next API
Conference.
Advisory Committee Feedback
Brazosport College - Recruiting at high schools
Are currently using the some of the WECM standardized courses
Brazosport College and the Dow Chemical Company are currently working
together on pilot course (PT3). It's an estimated 300 hours of work
for the NSF Grant.
Alvin College - 93 students in program
Piloting Safety, Health & Environment Course
San Jacinto College - Central Campus - Massive growth in
enrollment.
Now offering 20 sections in Process Technology
1 new instructor
Accreditation - PTEC program would be rated exemplary if program was
at least three years old.
Wharton County Jr. College - Tessinger's has donated half of their building for class space for Process Technology classes, also built two additional classrooms. Grand Opening Soon.

Alliance will get 10 copies of video free, the video will be sold to
Alliance members.
Volunteers to validate script are: Doug Hill, Lamar Garrett and Bill
Raley.
Activity: An informational/motivational video concerning preparation for jobs in the petroleum and chemical industries.
Audience: Ninth and tenth graders, junior high and high school students.
Message: There are excellent jobs available in the petroleum and chemical industries for those who have prepared for them.
Objectives: After viewing the video, the audience will:
1. Know of the existence of community college courses aimed at giving them job skills needed in the petroleum and chemical industries;
2. Be motivated to begin taking courses in high school which prepare them for employment in the industries.Running Time: a maximum or ten minutes
