Nassau Bay Hilton
Date:
Friday, November 17, 2000
Time:
9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Steve
Ames, President opened the meeting and welcomed everybody to the
last GCPTA Meeting of the year.
He thanked everyone for attending under such adverse weather
conditions. The
participants introduced themselves.
There were 33 members in attendance.
Steve
explained to the membership that the GCPTA met 5 times a year and
next year’s meeting dates were on the Agenda.
He invited all who would be interested in serving on a
subcommittee to join one stating that the GCPTA is always looking
for new volunteers.
Approval
of Last Meeting Minutes
– Minutes
of the August 11, 2000 meeting were approved
November
17, 2000.
Subcommittee on
Rules/By-Laws – Merv Treigle
The
following members and changes were approved by the steering
committee:
1.

Frank Isaac, Formosa Plastics, Point Comfort, TX
Dennis Murphy, Louisiana Technical College, Reserve, LA
Lyndon Pousson, Louisiana Technical College, Reserve, LA
Harry Wood, Lamar Institute of Technology, Beaumont, TX
Merv explained the
make-up of the voting members of the Steering Committee.
Each college has three votes, i.e. one from the college and
two from the industry advisory board of the college.
Steve
Ames proposed that the Rules & By-Laws Committee look at a
recommendation for amending the present by-laws to allow for retired
or retiring industry members to remain as active members and
participants in the GCPTA. Steve
commented that without this amendment, the GCPTA would lose valuable
members and their contributions to the continuing success of the
efforts of the GCPTA, which was now in its 6th year.
All Steering Committee members in attendance approved this
proposal.
Steve
reviewed the new order forms for the NSF and LAAP Grants’
materials. The order
forms were made available to those in attendance and are available
on the Center for the Advancement of Process Technology (CAPT) web
site www.captech.org.
Steve reminded everyone that the order forms not be sent to
him or any officer of the GCPTA, but all orders should be directed
to CAPT. He reminded
everyone that a 25% discount is available to those that have paid
their 2000 GCPTA Subscription.
This includes both colleges and industry.
Merv
told everyone in attendance about the GCPTA receiving the Business
Coalition of the Year Award from the National Alliance of Business
(NAB). The award was
accepted by Steve Ames, Merv Treigle and Joanna Kile on behalf of
the GCPTA at the NAB National Conference held in Washington, D. C.
on October 30, 2000.
Letters
were sent to Governor George Bush, Senators Phil Gramm and Kay
Bailey Hutchison and Representatives Nick Lampson and Kenneth
Bentson inviting them to attend the awards ceremony.
All of their busy schedules prevented them from attending.
However, Governor George Bush responded to the invite with a
letter to the GCPTA congratulating us on our award and our efforts
to upgrade the workforce in industry.
This letter will be framed and available for all to see at
all future meetings. Copies of the letter will be made available to all
members of the GCPTA. In
addition, a copy of the letter will be posted on our web site.
§
Career
Fair
The next GCPTA
Career Expo will be held Friday, February 2, 2001 at San Jacinto
College-Central Campus. Karen
stressed the importance of participation in this event.
Steve Ames encouraged industry to participate in the event
even if they are not hiring at the time.
He asked all to mark their calendars for this event.
Packets with the Career Expo information will be mailed to
GCPTA college and industry representatives in December.
A registration form will be posted on GCPTA web site www.processtech.org.
§
Newsletter
Karen asked that
articles for the next GCPTA newsletter be submitted by e-mail to the
GCPTA at atgcpta@msn.com.
She gave examples of articles that might be submitted such as
success stories on new students hired, internships, testimonials and
the letter from Governor George Bush on the NAB Award.
Karen
informed everyone that she would be resigning from the Public
Relations Subcommittee because her job focus would be changing. Lou Caserta asked that everyone applaud Karen for
her contributions to the on-going success of the GCPTA. Karen did say that she would be involved in the
upcoming Career Expo.
Steve
Ames asked that all colleges look at their respective Internet web
sites and that they provide to the GCPTA web site a direct link to
their Process Technology site.
In addition, Steve noted that prior information received by
the GCPTA indicated there is a drop in the PTech student enrollment.
Perhaps, this is due in part to the low unemployment in the
nation. He reaffirmed
the on-going necessity for the colleges and the GCPTA to continue to
market the profession of Process Technology.
He noted that 80% of students coming out of high school are
not going to college immediately and, therefore, should be informed
about manufacturing jobs as a career choice.
Steve solicited ideas from the membership as to how we might
be able to accomplish this. It
was noted that most students do not even know what PTech means.
Therefore, an effort should be made at the high school level
to educate students and their parents as to explain PTech and what a
career in industry can provide.
It was suggested that local industries go to the high schools
every semester to do this.
Mike reported that
there was a good turnout at the IPTA meeting in New Orleans on
September
12, 2000. The meeting
theme was "Sharing Information “, and that is what the IPTA
is all about. This
annual meeting enables all “member” alliances, i.e. Alaska,
Louisiana, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Alabama, Mississippi, etc. to get
together and share information vital to all.
And, because of this meeting new contacts from states not
participating have been made. Steve
Ames interjected that this was indeed a “Great Meeting”.
Merv reminded all that the IPTA Meeting Minutes were on the
GCPTA web site.
§

Subcommittee
on Tech Prep – Renea Campbell
§ New Committee – has met twice at Rohm & Haas Bayport location.
§ Marketing to students at an earlier age is a key focus need.
§ High School courses are available, but students and parents are not aware of them.
There is a great need to promote interest in high schools, not only with students and parents, but with administrators. Must inform all of them what PTech is and can offer as a career choice. Parents and students need to know there is an alternative to a four-year degree and that is a 2-year AAS Degree.
§ Committee is looking at the model used by the Automotive Industry in high schools.
Automotive Industry Companies such as General Motors, Nissan, etc. speak at state educational conferences for high school teachers to promote their industry as a career choice.
§ The Tech Prep Subcommittee needs more industry reps to join.
§ There is a need to look at partnering with 4-year colleges to allow articulation of Process Technology AAS degree to BAAS. This is a major issue with parents of college bound students.
Financial
Report – Ed Stiles
Ed Stiles, Treasurer gave the financial report. He reported that expenses to-date are $29,860.51. Income from subscriptions and other such as the sale of manuals and students workbooks is $50,004.94. Ed stressed that the GCPTA is a self-sustaining organization supported mainly by subscriptions. Therefore, he encouraged all to continue their subscription support in the coming year. Subscription requests will be mailed out at the beginning of January for the year 2001.
College
Advisory Committees
§ TSTC – Elaine Frazier reported that their Advisory Committee was working to get their enrollment numbers up in Process Technology. They are offering a $600 grant to the first 24 students who enter into the program based on their not needing any remediation courses and not having declared a major. If after having taken at least 12 credit hours and having maintained a 3.0 GPA, the students can then apply for a $3,000 scholarship, which is provided by industry. They are also looking at offering night courses for those not able to attend during the day.
Eight students will graduate in December.
§ Alvin Community College – 100 students enrolled in the PTech Program. Currently piloting PTI and PTII. Industry partners are looking at upgrading the hands on facilities for PTech at Alvin.
§ Lamar Institute of Technology, Beaumont – Harry Wood reported that ExxonMobil has donated $10,000 per year for the next 4 years to sponsor full scholarships for PTech students. In addition, they are providing co-op jobs for these students after 1 year of PTech studies. He also reported that the outside Skid Unit donated by ExxonMobil will be up and running in the early summer of 2001. For those students who will be unable to co-op, this unit will provide excellent experience.
Five hundred (500) students are currently enrolled in the PTech Program.
§ McNeese University – Carol Schulte reported that they are redoing their curriculum catalog to bring the PTech Program in sync with the GCPTA Core Curriculum. The university is currently working on a 2 plus 2 program for PTech by the year 2003. The area plant managers have appointed 6 people to oversee curriculum and PTech development at both McNeese State University and Louisiana Technical College-Sowela Campus.
§ Louisiana Technical College-Sowela Campus – Linton Lecompte reported that they had approximately 28 students enrolled the second quarter. The new lab for hands-on learning should be on campus by February 2001. They are currently both newspaper and TV spots to encourage students and other community members to consider Process Technology as a career choice.
§ San Jacinto College-Central Campus – Jack Makarczyk reported that the weekend program for Process Technology has been a success and they are looking to expand the program.
§ Lee College – Paul Bolomanskie reported that students in the Tech Prep Program in PTech are in need of funds to help offset the cost of taking the program in high school.
§ Brazosport College – Robert Rodgers reported their courses were lined up with the GCPTA. Tom Fowler from Brazosport reported that the Sweeney ISD had approached them to do a presentation to the Advisory Committee.
§ Del Mar College – Lee Sloan reported that the Corpus Christi Army Depot (CCAD) was looking to hire about 70 students per year and are paying them $13 an hour with the stipulation that they will finish the Airframe/Power Plant Mechanics Program with an AAS in 2 years. They are working 35 hours a week and must carry 6 to 12 hours minimum and at the end of 2 years it could lead to permanent employment at $16 plus per hour. This caused a major enrollment shift in declared majors at the college because over 500 students applied. This according to Lee is hurting the enrollment in PTAC and other technical programs. Del Mar is currently looking to hire a fulltime Process Technology faculty member.
§ College of the Mainland – Mike Kukuk reported that 195 students are currently taking PTech courses and 139 students have declared that their major. The pilot plant should be ready for the spring of 2001. COM hired 2 fulltime faculty members from industry for PTech, Mike Cobb, Administrator/Instructor and Jerry Byrum, Instructor. Mike also reported that the college had invited Texas City Industries, plant managers, human resource managers and recruiters and production managers to a luncheon to explain the history of PTech and what’s happening with PTech and the GCPTA. The benefits of PTech in dollars were presented to all those present.
§ Houston Community College – John Galiotos reported that he had made his first Advisory Committee Meeting in October. They currently have 12 students enrolled in the program and 20 more have committed to enrolling next semester. They are currently developing TV ads and other media advertisement to recruit students. When the area ISD Science teachers have a meeting, they are making a 20-minute presentation on Process Technology. Houston Community College is currently in need of a fulltime PTech Instructor.
§ Wharton County Jr. College – Diane Binford reported their first graduates graduated in May and four more will graduate this fall. A social gathering was held to introduce the students and industry members to each other. According to Diane this was a successful gathering. They are currently holding classes in a temporary location in Bay City. They should move to their permanent location the first part of next year.
New
Business – Steve Ames & Merv Treigle
Merv Treigle presented to those in attendance that the GCPTA Officer’s Election was to be held and that no other candidates for office had come forth or had been offered for consideration. He informed them that the current officers were standing for re-election and asked if there were any nominations from the floor. None being offered, a motion was made to vote for the current officers for re-election. The motion was seconded and all voting members affirmed the motion by acclamation. The current officers were re-elected to the offices as follows: Steve Ames, President; Merv Treigle, Secretary; and Ed Stiles, Treasurer.
Steve Ames
presented to those in attendance the GCPTA’s current and planned
activities regarding application for a NSF Center Grant.
Steve made the following presentation outlining the major
efforts and areas that would need to be addressed to qualify for a
Center Grant.
